JOB DESCRIPTION

The Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI) is responsible for the economic, social, institutional, governance and policy aspects of FAO’s activities related to fisheries and aquaculture and their development, with particular emphasis on human well-being, food security and poverty reduction; post-harvest utilization, marketing and trade with due regard to the protection of the environment, food security and the well-being of fishery communities; collection, compilation, validation, trend analysis and dissemination of the best available and up-to-date fishery statistics and for the syndication of the FAO information on all aspects of world fisheries and aquaculture.

The Division is also responsible for FAO’s activities related to the management and conservation of the living aquatic resources used by fisheries and aquaculture, including the biodiversity and ecosystem maintenance, with particular emphasis on the most vulnerable and threatened species and habitats; management of responsible fisheries and aquaculture in accordance with management standards and best practices; development of fisheries technology, with due regard to the protection of the environment, food security and the well-being of fishing communities, including the safety of fishers and fishing vessels.

The position is located in NFI at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Reporting Lines
The Fishery Officer (Market Analysis) reports to the Fishery Officer (Markets) in the Trade and Markets Team (NFIMT).

Technical Focus
Research and market analysis of specific fisheries and aquaculture species or products, development of information products on markets, species and other relevant aspects, and calculating and monitoring selected Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the FAO custodianship. The produced analysis, reports and knowledgeable products will be organized and disseminated in several distribution multimedia formats to facilitate information access on markets and the overall understanding of the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

Key Results
Collection and analysis of information, data and statistics and project/meeting services to support programme projects, products and services.

Key Functions
• Collects and analyses relevant technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology related information, data and/or statistics to support the delivery of programme projects as well as products and services.
• Undertakes analysis, provides technical input for plans and reports and edits/revises technical/scientific documents.
• Participates in the development of improved work methods, tools and systems.
• Updates databases and web pages.
• Participates in multidisciplinary project/work teams.
• Collaborates in the development of training tools and materials and the organization of workshops/seminars, etc.
• Participates in the organization, conduct and follow-up of meetings, consultations and conferences, the development/production of required materials and the provision of information and assistance to partners.

Specific Functions
• Supports the updating of the SDG indicator 14.7.1.
• Prepares periodical analytical and technical reports, papers, briefs and media articles on SDG indicator 14.7.1., and on the markets for specific fisheries and aquaculture species based on economic analysis, including policy, market development, and emerging issues.
• Performs forward-looking market scenario analyses of global markets for selected fisheries and aquaculture species, using appropriate statistical inputs and tools.
• Collects, stores, manages and analyses data to inform and guide the work involving market analysis of selected fisheries and aquaculture species.
• Contributes to the further development of FAO Fish Price Index.
• Develops market dissemination tools to propagate information on markets of fisheries and aquaculture products.
• Provides technical inputs and consolidate collected information on market analysis of selected fisheries and aquaculture species in relevant studies, publications, knowledge products and dissemination materials, including guidelines, manuals, research papers, capacity building and training materials.
• Collaborates in the consolidation of inputs, provides technical analysis of the overall content, and carries out all the necessary final technical adjustments for publishing in one periodical publication at least, involving markets for fisheries and aquaculture products.
• Prepares and organizes events, including consultations, technical assistance, capacity building and field meetings involving the analysis of selected fisheries and aquaculture species.
• Provides support to the FAO Sub-Committee on Fish Trade, particularly following up on their recommendations on market issues involving fisheries and aquaculture products.
• Maintains relations with relevant institutions, networks and platforms involved in the market of fisheries and aquaculture products.
• Supports the activities associated with market information to strengthen the linkages between global markets and small-scale fishers.
• Collaborates with NFI colleagues in the associated area of work.
• Prepares or edits documents or reference works related to activities under the technical focus, including reports of meetings, documents for the FAO Sub-Committee on Fish Trade and training material.
• Maintains contacts with international or national bodies and builds partnerships in the associated area of work.
• Performs other duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
• Advanced university degree in business administration, economics, fisheries, agriculture, international relations, or other fields direct or indirectly linked to markets of fisheries and aquaculture products
• Three years of relevant experience in Commodity market analysis, preferably fisheries and aquaculture.
• Working knowledge of knowledge (proficient – level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate – level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills
• Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions, is desirable.
• Knowledge of key market specificities of fisheries and aquaculture products.
• Knowledge of the SDG framework and the Agenda 2030.
• Experience in retrieving, assessing and working with national economic data (Gross Domestic Product and disaggregates, if available) and sustainability level of fish stocks.
• Experience in the planning, developing and implementing market analysis of fisheries and aquaculture products.
• Relevant experience in coordinating and liaising with relevant international and regional organizations.
